Peach Mermaid Volume 1 by Haru Akebono

Peach Mermaid by Haru Akebono

Book Type: Shojo Manga

Author: Haru Akebono

Pages: 157

Summary(goodreads.com): Rune, an “ex”-mermaid, has come out from the ocean to be with the human she’s been pining for, Riku, her first love. But as fate would have it, she finds out that she'll never be able to become one with a human…?! This is the first volume of a sexy, yet pure, romantic comedy that's a bit risqué, and sure to make you laugh out loud!

My Review:

Unfortunately, I fell into the pitfall of judging a book by its cover. The mermaid named Rune is beautiful! I love her tail and cute appearance.

But there wasn't a lot of substance with this manga, and the characters are one-dimensional.

Essentially, there isn't a plot here except Rune trying to get with her boyfriend so she can finally become a human. The problem is that every time she gets horny, she grows a tail. At first, it's funny when Rune becomes aroused, but then it just gets old when the constant purpose of each chapter is to have sex with her human boyfriend.

The major problem I had with this manga is the abusive boyfriend, Riku. When she does something outlandish, he puts his hands on her, covers her mouth, and verbally abuses her. Also, he's like a moody emo kid with an attitude problem who never shows any signs of happiness. Although Rune is cute and beautiful, she has no other character traits except being horny all the time. Rune also has an older sister that's mentioned later, and this character doesn't have a real name except "big sis." The dialogue is constantly interrupted with ellipse pauses mid-sentence.

There seems to be a significant age difference between the two, but it's never clarified or explained. Riku found Rune when she was a child and he was a few years older. Now he's twenty, and they appear to be within the same age range.

Lastly, instead of an author's note, Akebono ends each chapter with the manga's development which disturbed the flow.

Final Note:

Because of the one-dimensional characters and lack of plot, I give this manga (*) 1 star.
