Siren Season 3 + Cancellation Notice?!

Siren Season 3 was the best season by far, showing the viewer another darker side of Ryn's world, including a new tribe that wants total dominance. Even with the amazing story line, is it true that Siren is cancelled for future seasons?

In this season, the show began with a phenomenal entrance of pure chaos when a new tribe of sirens/merfolk is introduced. We also learn about their leader, Tiamat, and her plans for the human race!

And while all of the chaos continues under the waves, Ryn is learning how to adapt to human life by shopping, cooking (funniest scene in the entire series!) and having a baby. This is the first time (aside from The Little Mermaid) that mer-fans got to see a beautiful baby mermaid alongside her mer-mother. We also learn how these innocent babies become ruthless predators in a short period of time.

One of my favorite central themes in this show is not just providing an entertaining story but also explaining to the viewer how pollution and plastics affect marine life, which is an issue I also discussed in my novel, Forbidden Tides. Because of this pollution, along with the mass destruction of marine life from other causes, Tiamat decides that sirens are the more powerful species and humans must be eliminated. Interwoven in a larger plot is the possibility of the sirens' secret being exposed, Ben mutating himself, and the interaction with other siren tribes.

Negatives:

A few issues I had were Maddie's behavior and her quick decision to kick Ben out of her life despite his difficult decision, which ultimately saved Ryn's life. In a way, because she was also in a relationship with Ryn, she distances herself again from someone who cares about her, which showed that she has a problem with commitment when things get hard. I wondered what the point was of all the romantic drama if the goal was to end it abruptly.

Now, let's briefly discuss the ending without giving too much away.

Is Siren Really Cancelled?

Unfortunately, the ending to this season was a bit disappointing. The main battle, which was built up through the entire season, was very quick and there were a lot of open endings to some side plots. What's bothering Siren fans the most is what happened to Ben, a rather ambiguous ending considering the show was cancelled.

According to multiple sources, Freeform decided to cancel the series and focus on some of their other shows, but fans are voicing their disappointment through social media and other petition platforms. Will this be enough to change Freeform's mind?

Even if the show doesn't continue, I strongly recommend checking out this awesome series. It had a grittier, science fiction spin on merfolk that isn't often portrayed with a focus on environmentalism.

I give this season between 3.5-4 stars.

Full series: 5 stars.
