Rite of Passage Hidden Object Game Review

Game Type: Hidden Object

  • About four hours, but it depends on how fast you can solve the puzzles

How can I play?

  • Available on the Steam app

Out of all the mermaid games I've played so far, Right of Passage: The Lost Tides is one of my favorites!

The story opens with a family taking a nice cruise. In the distance, a mermaid rises from the depths and puts a cursed storm on the entire ship. The gamer plays as one of the children, and we must abandon the ship immediately: the storm has compromised the hull! In this mystical storm, only your brother and yourself are able to escape. An ominous mist slowly encroaches the entire ship until you watch your parents disappear. Before the player leaves, the father gives the player a strange trinket resembling a compass, which helps with puzzles later on.

20 years later, the player is still dealing with the grief of losing her parents. There's even a monument to the strange tragedy in the middle of town.

As you navigate through the mystery and unravel what happened, we learn there is a murderous siren/mermaid out there (who is gorgeous!) What is her story? Why is she attacking innocent people?

The story is excellent with really interesting and unique lore about mermaids and how they are created, which is so different from other mermaid tales. The mermaid is gorgeous!! I love her tale design and yes, those are gills on her neck! So cool!

Some of the plot digresses a bit at one part of the story. I also wondered how the protagonist's father came to own such a magical compass that didn’t belong to this world, which helps the player absorb and destroy magical barriers throughout the game.

The bonus game seems interesting and tells us more how the mermaid turned into a creature thirsty for violence, but unfortunately, the bonus game is bugged and so far, the developers haven't fixed the issue that multiple people mentioned on Steam.

For its complex puzzles, gorgeous scenery, good story and beautiful mermaid, I give this game 4 stars.
