Siren TV Show: Review Of Season 1*

Run Time: Each episode is about 1 hour

Rating: I would give this PG-13. There are some suggestive scenes and gory ones as well

Summary(google.com): Legend has it that Bristol Cove was once home to mermaids. Now, this coastal town has a mysterious new visitor in a girl named Ryn, who may just prove that all of the stories are true. Ryn catches the eye of local marine biologist Ben, and when he begins to show interest, fellow marine biologist Maddie becomes suspicious. Others in town, like deep sea fisherman Xander, are on a quest to discover the truth that is out there, and Helen, the town eccentric, knows more about the mysterious creatures than she lets on. The battle between man and sea takes a dangerous route as these predators seek to claim their birthright.

My Review: Mermaids turn into deadly and savage creatures from old mythic tales in this phenomenally-done drama series. Instead of princesses with magic powers, the mermaids on Siren are deadly predators, who are also stunningly beautiful! Here is my review of the first season.

First, I loved the setting detail. When one is watching the dramatic landscapes and oceanic scenes, you feel enraptured with the beauty of both the sea and the small town of Bristol Cove. While there weren't too many underwater scenes, the viewer will definetly be transported with the beauty of the Northwest.

The acting, especially with the mermaids, gave me goosebumps! Watching Eline Powell, who plays Ryn, redefined how a real mermaid would behave in a human setting. She growls, hisses, and presents a defending posture when threatened. Her ability to communicate startled both the scientists and the viewers, who are starting to believe that Ryn and her species are less animalistic and more human than previously believe. This concept reminded me of my first mermaid novel, Forbidden Tides. See the post I wrote here on the similarities!

Now, let's get to my favorite part; the tail!

Armed for battle with some of the sea's deadliest animals, the tails on Siren have barbs for protection and a powerful stinger. Compared to most mermaid television shows or movies, Ryn's transformation isn't pleasant and sparkly. She goes through an extreme metamorphosis, melting away her skin and shifting the bones and muscles to grow her tail. Check out this amazingly done CGI of the first transformation scene:

With a vast array of characters, beautiful scenery, a complex plot of secrets, and dangerous mermaids lurking off the waters of Bristol Cove, this series was amazing! I am still waiting for Siren fan merch to add to my collection. I give the first season (*****) 5 stars!
